Owls, Owls, Owls

Isn’t Halloween Fun?  If you came by the shop during our Spooktacular Shop Hop this weekend, you got our cute owl pattern from the really cute free Halloween quilt pattern by Pearl Pereira on the Red Rooster Fabric website.  (We did get permission to use it for the Hop.)  Our Barbara made three great projects with the owl.  There is a table runner, a placemat and a pillow and you can download the pattern here if you missed it.  We also thought you might like to see the photos for reference.  Hope you all have a Happy Halloween.  We are celebrating it all over the shop!

Halloween House Gift Idea

Our dear Sheila Cautillo is at it again.  She just designed this adorable little Halloween House that you can fill with cookies or candy and give as a gift to a friend or keep for yourself.

The pattern is here for you to download for free.  There are designs for every side of the house and the pipe cleaners look like a lightning strike.  It is just so, so cute.  You can see it in the shop if you drop by.

A Great Quilt Book – Learning from the Young

Sunday Morning Quilts bookMarilyn and I ordered the new book “Sunday Morning Quilts” because we loved the fresh and easy quilts in the beautiful photographs.  One Sunday morning I decided to actually read the book and felt totally inspired by its young authors, Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison, to tackle my fabric and make some quilts.

Although I consider myself an organized person, my quilt stash at home needs attention, and this book spoke to me in a way no other book on organizing has.  They not only teach you how to cut up your leftover fabric, but how to put it together to make new “fabric.”  It is all so clear, simple and truly inspiring.  Why didn’t I think of this?

Happy Quilting,

Susan

May 19, 2012 – Red & White Tea

Pretty Red and White QuiltsThank you, thank you, thank you to all of the wonderful quilters who brought us their beautiful work to display last Saturday. It is always such a nice day for us at Flying Geese when all of you meet your friends and come to spend some time admiring each other’s quilts.

goodies at tea

The staff enjoys making special treats for our guests, putting flowers on the tables and turning the classroom into a temporary tearoom.

The favors given were cute little pouches with a red raspberry herbal tea bag, and a red or white zipper pin made by students at Emerson Middle School as a thank you for the fabric and yarn donated to them by our customers for their fiber arts classes.

Our red & white gift basket was won by Ardelle Stenson.  Congratulations!

We hope to see you all at our annual Tea again next year.  If you had to miss it, be sure to put it on your calendar when we set the date next Spring. As Susan’s sister Anne would say “It’s a Lovely Lady Day.”

Free Pattern – Red & White Yo Yo Quilt

We had such a good time at our Red & White Tea on Saturday, May 19, in the shop.  It is always a fun time for the staff and customers of Flying Geese.  We bake our favorite goodies and decorate the classroom like a tea room.  Of course the main thing is the beautiful display of quilts made by our teachers, customers and staff.  This year the theme was Red & White quilts, and our talented quilters once again, out did themselves.

Yo Yo quilt

We would like to share the free pattern for our red and white yo-yo quilt, designed by Sheila Cautillo.

Click on this link for the directions to make the Yo Yo Quilt.

Click on this link for the layout for the Yo Yo Quilt.

If ever there was a “Go To Girl” Sheila is it.  All we have to do is mention that we need something in the shop and her creative wheels start turning.

This quilt has been hanging in the shop for a while and people always stop to look at it and comment on how cute it is.  She made most of the 216 yo-yos while on a cruise, sitting by the pool.  As she sat there, she noticed a woman across the way, also making yo-yos for a project.  Of course they ended up chatting about quilts and quilting.

Isn’t it amazing how as women, we are able to connect in so many simple yet miraculous ways?

Happy Quilting,

Susan

Retro Clean Works to Clean Quilts Safely

retro clean for cleaning vintage quilt blocks

Have you ever had an antique quilt or piece of vintage fabric with those brown age stains that just ruined the pristine look of what otherwise would be a real prize? I recently found a  bag of 30′s butterfly blocks at an antique store in Old Town Temecula, but the blocks had brown age stains. I have more than 30 blocks, enough to make a quilt, but they needed some cleaning.

I know Retro Clean is a safe and effective way to bring hand washable textiles (i.e. vintage linens, quilts, clothing and laces) back to a state free of brown age stains while leaving the fabric with renewed color and vitality. I cleaned my blocks with Retro Clean, and as you can see from these before and after pictures, Retro Clean truly worked to bring back the vitality to my beautiful butterflies.

Happy Quilting,

Marilyn
